Does Signing Petitions Make Any Real Difference?
Short answer: Yes
How great would it be if when we signed our name on something, the desired action immediately ensued? Unfortunately, signing a petition in person or online doesn’t guarantee that the desired action will take effect. In fact, most petitions have very limited legislative impact. However, this doesn’t make signing these campaigns a waste of time, as the mere act of signing a petition can help to raise awareness and inspire real activism about important issues. When we sign a petition, we learn about different issues and we discover what topics we feel most concerned about. The actual signature may not make a difference, but the commitment to investigating how we feel about an issue encourages us to get involved in real, meaningful ways. If we are exposed and educated about new concerns, our emotional reactions can lead us to making more conscientious choices around the movements we care about. We can more mindfully choose our products and improve our consumption when we are exposed to the reality of certain industries. We can donate money, our time, and our vote to be actionable about meaningful causes, beyond the petition. Acknowledging our stance while reading and signing a petition can inspire us to involve our actions beyond that signature or click. Our emotional commitment to a topic is born by reducing our feeling of hopelessness about how effective or influential we can really be. So while a signature may not be a magical cure to injustice, attaching our name to things we care about does make a difference, energizing us as individuals.
